Events
There are many different events celebrated during the year in Andalusia. All cities and small villages honour their patron’s day and especially the Holy Week. It is a wonderful occasion to feel the religious spirit of this province.
Feria de Abril (Sevilla)
It is held two weeks after Eastern in Sevilla. A part of the city is covered with the typical “casetas” (tents) where people meet to eat and drink, dance “sevillanas” and chat. Almost all of them are private, so the access is limited. But the Town Hall and other official organizations of the public sector also have their casetas which can be visited by everybody. During the feria the women wear typical Andalusian dresses and men ride on beautiful horses or carriages through the area of the feria. At the same time, in the afternoon, there is bullfighting in the “Maestranza”.
Romería del Rocío (Huelva)
This famous event is held in a little village called El Rocío near the Coto de Doñana. In the month of May nearly a million people come to this usually quiet place in order to honour the Virgen del Rocío. They come walking, on horseback or in carriages, celebrating their pilgrimage every night singing until their arrival in El Rocío, when the image of the Virgen is taken out of the church and shown in procession for twelve hours through the streets.
Las Cruces de Mayo (Córdoba)
It is celebrated in Córdoba during the first three days of May. People compete for the most beautiful flower decoration of their squares, streets and patios. From the 5th to the 15th the decorated patios are opened to the public.
Carnival (Cadiz)
The carnival is celebrated in Cádiz in February and is very popular all over Spain. The famous “charangas” (bands) sing political or religious songs with a critical and also humorous background.
